A significant proportion of the Parish Council’s work is focused on parishioners’ applications for permission to build or extend.
Planning permission is generally required for carrying out any form of 'development' and this includes the use of land and buildings as well as the more obvious construction or alteration of buildings. Consent is also required from Tunbridge Wells Borough Council (TWBC) for works which alter, extend or would result in the demolition of – or even part of - a Listed Building or properties within a Conservation Area. However, many small-scale operations do not require planning permission. These are referred to as 'Permitted Development'. Visit TWBC to find out more. Also, the Government's Planning Portal provides lots of useful information and guidance. Once an application has been submitted, the Parish Council will pass their comments. These comments must be taken into account by TWBC when they determine the application. If you would like to comment on a planning application, you can do so online here (you will need to register first). You will need the Application Number, but do not use the ‘TW/’ prefix.
A list of the most recent planning applications available for comment can be found on the TWBC website https://twbcpa.midkent.gov.uk/online-applications/search.do?action=weeklyList. Enter the Ward (Benenden and Cranbrook) and Parish (Benenden) then click Search and a list will appear (you can also select dates or enter a planning reference number for more specific searches) A record of applications considered by the Parish Council is also kept on the Agenda and Minutes page on this website under Planning Meeting minutes.
Residents can sign up to receive on-line notification of planning applications received by the Borough Council.
Whilst the Parish Council is not legally obliged to publish details of applications which it is consulted on, it will endeavour to keep parishioners up to date. Details of planning applications that the Parish Council will be considering are published on agendas and on the Planning Applications page of this website.
